2011′s Best Current Modern British Art Books
It has already been a fantastic year for Modern British Art books from the very best in British Design to the publication of long awaited monographs of renowned masters of modern art.
The most highly anticipated John Piper in Kent and Sussex concentrating on Pipers depictions of the landscape of Britain. With contributions by acclaimed experts including Alexandra Harris, David Heathcote and Richard Ingrams this title explores the full breadth of Pipers art including the stained glass and church vestment works produced for the Romney Marsh Churches and the famous Chichester Cathedral Tapestry commission. Some of the most important of Pipers works were produced in Sussex and Kent, many of which are now in the Pallant House Gallery collection.
John Piper in Kent and Sussex is a must for Piper fans and for anyone who loves the countryside of Sussex and Kent.
Following the recent successes of publications on Ravilious – Ravilious in Pictures and Ravilious at War, the final volume in the trilogy has just been published. Ravilious in Pictures: A Country Life features twenty-two beautiful watercolours painted in north-west Essex and on the coast. The art is enhanced by essays in which James Russell explores the artist’s home life, and the people and places he visited around the villages of Hedinham, Great Bardfield and Castle, as well as offering insight in to the culture and customs of 1930s England.
If you love design, you have a choice of several excellent books published earlier this year.
A beautiful revised and updated version of Lesley Jackson’s Robin & Lucienne Day: Pioneers of Contemporary Design and A Symbol for the Festival: Abram Games and the Festival of Britain by Naomi Games are just a taste of the collection of design publications released in 2011.
As well as celebrating the best of British design, they coincide with the 60th Anniversary of the Festival of Britain and the current post-war art and design revival.
For those interested in post-war British painting, the long awaited and first ever full-scale monograph on John Craxton, written by Ian Collins will be welcomed. Illustrated throughout in colour, this book brings to life his paintings from the early neo-romantic pastoral pieces to the vibrant paintings inspired by Crete. It also examines the importance of Craxton’s role in post-war British art and his early relationship with Lucian Freud. Additionally, it covers his wonderful ballet and book design work.
Later in the year, Pallant House Gallery will be holding the first major retrospective of the work of Edward Burra since 1985. Accompanying the Burra collection will be a major publication by Simon Martin, shedding light on previously unpublished paintings.
