A Degree In Humanities Will Include Studying Digital Technology
They’re getting free iPads. Students who participate in a new honors program in digital cultures and creativity at a university in Maryland this fall have been promised the tablet computers as part of the program’s launch. This same institution also offers courses in electronic literature and new media that covers such areas as online books and electronic book readers.
These days, it’s difficult to separate the humanities and technology, according to what Program Director Matthew Kirschenbaum told the writer of an article in the university’s student newspaper, DiamondbackOnline. This particular university also is home to a technology in the humanities institute, where an international group devoted to writing, publishing and reading electronic literature is based. According to its website, the institute works at least in part to produce and preserve digital games and virtual worlds, as well as electronic literature. The institute of technology in the humanities, along with the Maryland University’s computer science and English departments, has provided students enrolled in a Book 2.0 course a prototype of an electronic reading device. On its website are audio archives related to the effort as well as discussions of mobile apps that support children’s storytelling and a Smithsonian Art Museum alternate reality game. The humanities have often been linked with the arts, but organizations inside and outside of universities now also link humanistic studies with areas such as technology and science.
An institute at a Virginia university, for example, partners with libraries, publishers, information technology companies and others on humanities computing initiatives, according to its website. Humanities degrees online and on campus, of course, involve classes beyond English and literature. Students working toward humanities degrees are known to also study subjects such as history, philosophy, culture, ethics and more. Studies such as these involve exploring meaning, value and significance, the Collaboratory co-founders wrote in an essay related to the ties between the humanities and technology. Humanists link the old and the new and then engage the best of both, they noted.
A bachelor’s degree that incorporates a holistic analysis of applications is scheduled to be added to the roster of programs at a Connecticut university’s engineering college this fall. The degree program, in sustainability, is to include studies in the humanities, a recent article in the Connecticut Business News Journal reported. Some of the required classes are to include research methods in sustainability, global solutions to sustainability and contemporary issues of art and the environment, the Business News Journal noted.
