Antique Trader

Antique Trader
the one show – Ivory?

I can see the reasons for the rule that we should only allow antique ivory to be sold.

however, one trader was singled out because he was selling re-worked ivory.
Basically he had taken antique ivory – and changed the ivory stem on it, to accomodate modern metal fittings.
Apparently it is against the law to alter antique ivory… even to cut down or file an old fitting.

the comment at the end basically said that anyone who breaks this law is perpetuating the poaching of elephants….

Why?
can someone explain how chopping 3 mm of the end of an ivory piece, and re-tapping a hole will cause another elephant to be shot.
In fact the opposite seems more likely:
If an old piece has to be thrown away, rather than re-used, then the owner may want a brand new peice to take it’s place

can anyone explain this law, please

l understand your confusion but any reworked ivory looks new and perpetuates the idea that it is a good thing to have new carvings – it starts to heat up the desire for new ivory – invigorates the ivory trade – then more elephants are killed to provide for the renewed trade ….. it is like the fur trade – better to kill the demand and the trade, rather than the animals…..
