Collectable Books- What Makes a Book A Collectable?
Collectable books are books that others desire for a collection. What makes them desirable is more the nature of the collection than the book itself. If one collects books on a certain subject, then any book on that subject may be seen as a desirable book to that collector. If one collects classic first editions, then those are the books that will be considered valuable to that person. There are, however, some standard collectable elements that are commonly sought by many book collectors, and some characteristics of the physical book itself that may make a book more collectable than others. Knowing these can make is easier to spot them in unexpected locations.
The term “collectable books” generally conjures up images of old, heavy leather bound books that hold uninteresting, outdated stories. They may be envisioned on shelves, in book cases, or coffee tables, but rarely if ever are they imagined to be read. Most think that they are sought after simply for the prize of being able to claim ownership. While this is certainly true of some, for others there is more to collecting than that. A collector of recipe books, for example, may desire old and rare editions, but will also enjoy reading and trying the recipes inside.
Some factors that make books collectable include edition, rarity, and condition. The better the condition, the rarer the book, and the earlier the edition in general makes for a more sought after work. These terms are typically true regardless of the subject of the book desired. A collector of classics will look for these characteristics the same way as a collector of antique cook books. Leather bound books are usually more desired if they exist, though some books are never published with full binding. While what often makes a book desired is personal to the individual, these terms are commonly sought after by all collectors.
A collector may find collectible books a number of ways. The fastest and easiest way today is online. Simply do a search or look for rare and antique book retailers that sell over the web. This is a great way to search for a specific book and gain more security and assurance that you are actually getting what you think you are getting. Most professional sellers of these types of books verify that the books are what they say they are. This can avoid much disappointment, as paying for something that is not what it was claimed to be can be devastating for a collector.
