Do U really need a degree in illus./cartooning to go in2 comics & get your stuff self-published & distributed?
Hi, please excuse the spelling. I have a degree in animation/film and and I want to either go back to school to get another degree in illustration/cartooning or get some training with Art Instructional Schools with their 2-year program. I’ve been out of school over a decade.Do I really need a degree in illustration/cartooing? Did Simon and Schuster, Kane, Kirby, Lee, and all these other comic book bigshots have degrees in illustration/cartooning before they went into the comics bisuness an got their material published and distributed? I want to get my own comics self-published and distributed. Please help me out.Thank you.
Many of the “masters” had only high school art diplomas. Few went to college. Today, there as many schools which teach cartooning. You might want to take a continuing studies class on the basics of cartooning. Or a summer intensive class. Ask for an interview with the faculty to see if you need to enroll.
As an animator, you have the ability to draw and design characters, as well as know how to tell stories.
You probably can also storyboard, which is similar to a comic strip.
Think of comics panels as extremes. The reader is the in-betweener, filling in the space between panels.
I suggest you read Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics. Also, Able & Madden’s Drawing Words and Writing Pictures is a good textbook.
Put everything on the web. Paper publishing is expensive. If you ask nicely, Jeff Smith may offer some advice. John K. runs a blog for artists… invite only. Attend local comics conventions and socialize.
