I LOVE Jane Eyre! It is an excellent book. 
To answer your question:
At first I was shocked- How could he have done this?
Soon, I became angry with his father and brother, as well as Bertha’s family. They mistreated him through their manipulation.
Bronte obviously wanted the reader to feel sympathetic towards Rochester since Jane loves him, so the way he tells the story is meant to show his sorrow and regret about the situation, as well as blame the results on his family and hers.
