MORMONS: Is their still speculation allowed in your General Conferences?
The Journal of Discourses deservedly ranks as one of the standard works of the Church, and every right-minded Saint will certainly welcome with joy every number (issue) as it comes forth.
President George Q. Cannon, Journal of Discourses, Preface, Vol.8.
Each successive Volume of these Discourses is a rich mine of wealth, containing gems of great value, and the diligent seeker will find ample reward for his labor. After the fathers and mothers of this generation have made them the study of their lives their children’s children will find that they are still unexhausted, and rejoice that this Record has been handed down from their fathers to also aid them in following the way of life.
Apostle Orson Pratt, Preface. Volume 3.
Oddly, the current leadership of your church dismiss many early conference talks now. How do you know the talks given nowadays won’t also be called speculative and non-binding, in the near future?
I find that the JOD is still used by the leadership of the Church. It has in the past 10 years actually become an even greater part of the standard curriculum. The Teachings of The Prophets texts are heavily based on materials in sermons by early church leaders.
Some individuals want to use the JOD to mine for controversy instead of spiritual gems. The forward in these recent books specifically states that they contain the principles of the current church practices and not topics like plural marriage.
