Henry Charles Bukowski (born Heinrich Karl Bukowski; August 16, 1920 – March 9, 1994) was an American poet, novelist and short story writer. His writing was influenced by the social, cultural and economic ambience of his home city of Los Angeles. It is marked by an emphasis on the ordinary lives of poor Americans, the act of writing, alcohol, relationships with women and the drudgery of work. Bukowski wrote thousands of poems, hundreds of short stories and six novels, eventually publishing over sixty books. In 1986 Time called Bukowski a “laureate of American lowlife”.[4] Regarding Bukowski’s enduring popular appeal, Adam Kirsch of The New Yorker wrote, “the secret of Bukowski’s appeal. . . [is that] he combines the confessional poet’s promise of intimacy with the larger-than-life aplomb of a pulp-fiction hero.”[5]

Jazz at Massey Hall $4.82 One of the most famous live recordings in jazz history, this May 1953 concert from Toronto brought together five of bebop’s greatest figures in alto saxophonist Charlie Parker (credited here as “Charlie Chan” in a purposely transparent attempt to sidestep Parker’s exclusive recording arrangement with another record company), trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, pianist Bud Powell, drummer Max Roach, and bas… |

Barfly [VHS] $14.98 The script for this movie was written by outrageous poet-author-alcoholic Charles Bukowski. But director Barbet Schroeder makes it into an oddly amusing story of a pugnacious drunk writer (Mickey Rourke) based on Bukowski himself. Rourke spends almost all of his time at the bar, struggling with sobriety (he’s against it) and, occasionally, having fistfights with the bartender (Frank Stallone). He … |

Tales of Ordinary Madness [VHS] $69.99 “Style is the answer to everything,” intones skid row poet Charles Serking, played by the suitably grizzled and worn Ben Gazarra, to his somnambulistic audience. Serking is, of course, a not-at-all veiled stand-in for beat legend Charles Bukowksi, whose autobiographical short stories were the basis for this film. But Serking, in many ways, comes off more like a gin-soaked fantasy of a skid row … |

Poetry in Motion [VHS] $19.95 Before the current poetry slam trend began, director Ron Mann presciently documented this series of poetic performances, including some by legendary writers who have since died (Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, John Cage, and Charles Bukowski). There’s Ginsberg in a suit, dancing and accompanied by a band as he practically sings his poems, John Giorno demonstrating his admitted desire to… |
