What happened in King Charles’ trial and execution?
I need to know if all newspapers are bias or not. Why we should side King Charles or why we should go against him.
Although a prisoner of Parliament, Charles engaged in political machinations which led to the Second English Civil War, an ill advised attempt by die hard Royalists and some Scots to overthrow Parliament and rescue Charles in 1648. The war was quickly over, resistance being crushed by Parliament’s large and efficient New Model Army (NMA).
However, the NMA was outraged – the Royalists had little chance of success, and the NMA blamed Charles for the outbreak of the war and all the lives lost in it, especially those of NMA soldiers. Pressurized by the rank and file and senior commanders of the NMA, Parliament was bullied into putting Charles on trial for “treason against the people of England” – Oliver Cromwell was a prime mover in this.
Many MPs and members of the House of Lords were against this, and refused to participate. Cromwell had to handpick the judges and prosecutor of what was basically a kangaroo court, and it was his influence that produced the charges, trial, verdict,sentence, and execution of Charles. The King himself also refused to participate in the proceedings, not recognizing either Parliament’s supposed right to try him or the legality of the process.
Essentially, under English Law, treason could only be against the Crown, so the charge against Charles had no basis under law, it was the extremist NMA and its commanders who wanted to get rid of Charles because they didn’t trust him. With Charles dead, they would be the main political force in the country and could run things by intimidating Parliament into doing what they wanted. They thus trumped the treason charge against him (treason carried the death penalty) and then packed the court with judges who wanted to find him guilty, sentence him to death, and execute him.
