In The Current Recession, Second Hand Books Are My Saviour
Now that my kids are getting older, it’s a shame, but some of the lovely things we used to do together as a family are now non-existent.
Currently my youngest is in the depths of researching for a huge history project she has been set at school.It wasn’t that many years ago that this would have been a trip to our local library and a huge load of books coming home with us.
Unfortunately nowadays she carries out all her research on the Internet, which for me is a real shame as I used to love our trips to the library.We quite often popped into the local library after school to have a scout around to see what books we could borrow. It’s funny but even though we may have just popped in for a couple of history books low and behold before you know it you are piled up with loads of children’s books.My daughter’s record for one of her visits was a massive 18 books.The weight of those books for my walk home was unbelievable, but that didn’t dissuade her from piling more and more books on.
Mind you, it wasn’t just my daughter who took advantage of the books in the library. I have been known to take out a few romance books in my time. I love to get stuck into a good old book and the wonderful thing about the library is that once you have finished one book you can return it and get choose a whole new story.
In our local library they also have a section for second hand books, and you can sometimes pick up quite a bargain. I must admit that the books aren’t always in tip top condition, but what can you expect when you only pay a few pence.
Much as I absolutely think the Internet is a marvellous tool, it is such a shame that some of the good old things we used to do will probably become non-existent.I can’t imagine it will be many years in the future before the number of libraries in our area dwindles and I think this will be a very sad day for us all.
