Using Found Objects To Make A Chandelier
When you think of a chandelier, undoubtedly delicate crystals or intricate iron works come to mind. However, you can also build a chandelier out of pretty much anything. If you have a collection or you want to continue a theme in your home, you can do it by building your own custom chandelier. Your chandelier can be graceful and elegant or perhaps you want to build a whimsical chandelier for your kid’s room. With just a tiny bit of electrical know how, or help from someone who has it, you can create a custom chandelier that will perfectly suit your space.
“Found” Things
As you think about making a chandelier from found objects, part of the fun is choosing the objects that you want to include in your lamp. You can make a chandelier out of virtually anything including plastic milk cartons, kitchen utensils, small pieces of wall art metal or even old hardware. Items that you select can be colorful, shiny, or translucent. Locating the best materials for your project is part of the fun of creating a custom chandelier.
Baubles and Beads
If you simply look around your home, you can find all sorts of things that will work to make a beautiful chandelier. If you have a box of old costume jewelry or any unstrung beads, they all make great embellishments for a custom chandelier. You can even take a trip through your kitchen to find elements of a beautiful chandelier. Possible embellishments can include anything from plastic cutlery to contemporary metal wall hangings or artisan metal wall art. Or use old teacups in a Victorian-inspired lighting fixture. You just need to use items that won’t melt or crack from the heat given off by the light bulbs; or place delicate pieces further away from the bulbs on your fixture.
Vines and Bones
If you want to create a beautiful chandelier for a rustic space, consider using driftwood, a grapevine or even tree branches to create your light. For a rustic country atmosphere, you can also use antlers and animal bones. Keep safety in mind, which means being aware of the heat that is given off by the light bulbs and be certain that the lamp is wired correctly.
Vintage Toys
A whimsical addition to a child’s bedroom could be a chandelier made of children’s vintage toys. You can choose a single type of toy like a jack in the box, or you can simply mix and match the toys for a fun effect. You can start with an existing chandelier as a base and mount your toys on it, or you can build the entire chandelier using toy parts. When you are creating your chandelier, you may discover that you will already have a good idea about making your next one.
