Col Plates

Traditional Andalucian Food
As you wander around the streets of any Andalucian town you may find yourself being drawn towards a particular bar because of the smells that are wafting from its kitchen. Then as you step into its cool interior you are greeted by plate upon plate of food that has been placed on the bar or at the tables where people are sat.
What you can enjoy like many others who are seated in the bars cool interior is tapas. Certainly if you have never tried traditional Andalucian food before this is the best way of doing so. Tapas is small portions of food served in not just bars, but also bodegas and tascas that can be both hot and col. You would normally drink with these a glass of dry Sherry (Copa Fino) Spanish of course or a cool glass of draught beer.
Originally the bars in the wine making region of Andalucia would cover over the glasses of wines in their bars a small dish to prevent the fruit flies from swarming around it and then into it. But rather than placing just a small dish over the glass to help further attract customers into their establishment many begun to then put a small piece of food on top.
Today of course you will find that the plates of Tapas are just provided beside the drink you have ordered and the cost of them varies from one bar to another. But generally you can expect to pay between 1 and 5 Euros for each plate of food that you order.
When it comes to ordering Tapas and you have never done so before it may be a good idea to ask the waiting staff to select some different types for you. However, I would recommend that you make sure they include some of the Serrano or Iberico Jamon (Ham), olives as well as some of the fish dishes.
