Duke’s Pearls: Bernard and Doris star stuns the red carpet at the Golden Globes
The Golden Globes were back with a bang Sunday night after taking the year off in 2008. As always, the hours before the awards caused as much hype as the event itself, with red carpet fashions scrutinised by a mob of fashion journalists. But in amongst the dazzling gowns and sparkling diamonds, perennial Hollywood icon Susan Sarandon caught my eye with her stylish and sophisticated long pearl necklace, made by New York boutique designer Fred Leighton.Susan clearly loved showing off her pricey pearls and even asked the designer if she could hold on to them. I’m not surprised – it was a combination of the iconic sophistication of pearls with a modern, funky twist.
You might say that the fact that Sarandon, still stunning at 62, was the only A-list celebrity at the Globes to be wearing pearls, means that we’re going back to the days of pearls being the jewels of choice for the “older” woman?Au contraire! Pearl jewellery has a timeless elegance and charm if you know how to wear it. By which I mean you need to go a little further than the high street jewelers and go for something a little more special! You can get pearls on the cheap, especially the abundance of fake and low grade stones on the internet these days, but they rarely have the style of the real deal. If you’re on a budget, go for natural freshwater pearls which can be beautiful. But for the true celeb treatment you should spend that little extra on saltwater pearls, the choice of Susan Sarandon on Sunday night.
Here is our list of the Top 5 celebrity pearl lovers over the years. All five women are style icons in their own right and yet very unique characters.Proof, if proof was needed, that it should be pearls, not diamonds, that are a girl’s best friend?
5. Jackie Kennedy – JFK’s missus knew a thing or two about looking good – and she knew a thing or two about pearls too, they were key to her iconic image of 20th Century sophisticated womanhood.
4. Liz Taylor – the epitome of all things glamorous and elegant in her day, Elizabeth Taylor gained royal status in the pearl kingdom by owning the world’s largest pearl necklace, La Peregrina, as worn by a whole range of European queens and princesses!
3. Sarah Jessica Parker – the Hollywood fashion icon made pearls the new hot celebrity trend by adorning an exquisite pearl necklace in 2008’s Sex and the City movie, and has been spotted with pearls on many a red carpet in recent years.
2. Princess Di – the English Princess of the People was also Princess of the Pearls, and will be always remembered for her taste in elegant pearl strings and accessories.
1. Audrey Hepburn – Who can forget the classy black dress and simple pearl necklace in Breakfast at Tiffany’s? She is arguably THE style icon of the 20th century, and will forever be associated with pearls.
