The Mercury Print Museum, Hobart

One of the best places to explore the grand history of Hobart, Tasmania is the Mercury Printing Museum. Tasmania’s glorious printing heritage is on display at this museum which is housed in the famous Ingle Hall; a Georgian building which is one of the oldest colonial structures in Australia. The Museum was initiated by the Mercury Newspaper with the assistance of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.

After extensive restorations with the help of Hobart’s finest architects the Museum now showcases the history of printing in Tasmania, from the early printing era to the development of Mercury and also shows how the printing industry and technology evolved from the 19th century to the 21st century, making your trip to Hobart worth your effort.

Visitors to the museum will find on display printing memorabilia from the era where typesetting by hand was used in printing. Also on display are samples from the ‘hot metal’ type and the advanced computer typesetting technique. The Museum is Mercury’s effort to showcase the development of printing and the main focus is educating its visitors.

The collection also includes Canary printing presses from the 18th century and the 19th century, type cases, photographic equipment used in early press as well as the some of the first equipment used by Mercury newspaper in their production.

This fascinating collection is housed in three rooms at the Ingle Hall and the displays have been enhanced with video and audio commentaries, interpretive panels as well as old films. Visitors are also afforded the rare opportunity of accessing the photo and text library system of Mercury Newspaper.
