Elizabeth Peters

Why didn’t Empress Elizabeth I like Catherine the Great’s parents?
I understand why the Empress didn’t like Catherine’s mother because she was pushy and arrogant. But when Elizabeth I was planning the wedding of Catherine and Peter III, she didn’t include Catherine’s father on the guest list and she even forbade him to visit her in Russia
Another thing I don’t understand was why Catherine had to copy ‘forms’ when she wrote to her familiy, forms like letters the Empress ordered her to copy instead of writing a letter with her own words.
Why was the Empress like that?
It must be remembered Catherine was not Russian, she was German. And, she was very young. Elizabeth having recogonized the many oddities of the future Tsar, had to make her Daughter in Law as Russian as possible. The parents of Catherine were in her past. Her future was Russia, and the sooner she forgot about her German traditions and lineage, the better as Russia would one day be forced to fight Germany, and it was in the best interest of Elizabeth to have a daughter in law who was obedient to her, and Mother Russia. It was all about making Catherine strong mentally and physically. And as history has taught us, it appears Elizabeth knew what she was doing, or just lucked out!
