What’s On In The Kennet District Of Wiltshire
Kennet is a former council area of Wiltshire, encompassing Marlborough, Pewsey, Devizes and Tidworth.
There’s plenty of things for the tourist to do such as visiting the beautiful Savernake Forest near Marlborough or boating on the Kennet and Avon canal but there are less obvious delight too.
Visitors can fly over the Wiltshire countryside in a two seater microlight from Clench Common Airfield, Marlborough Wiltshire with a CAA qualified pilot. Gaze down over the land below. Stop somewhere for coffee if you want.
If you like folk music, try the Devizes Folk Club. It meets every Monday at 8pm (except Bank Holidays and August). They are happy to see anyone interested in folk music.
Pop into the canal tug Bronte on the Kennet and Avon Canal where you can meet the artist blacksmith Brian Greaves. His boat is equipped with all the items you would expect in a forge, plus a few he has designed himself. His work ranges from gorgeous candlesticks to wave sculptures. He lives on canal boat Emily with his wife and children. He can sometimes be seen on the canal in Devizes.
The West Kennet Long Barrow is a Neolithic barrow (tomb) on a chalk ridge near Silbury Hill. Work started on the barrow in about 3600 BC and it was used until about 2500BC. Archaeological finds from the site can be seen at the Wiltshire Heritage Museum in Devizes. The barrow is an interesting site to visit and it even pre-dates Stonehenge.
Kennet district has five of Wiltshire’s eight white horses which can be seen in Hackpen Hill, Alton Barnes, Marlborough and Pewsey. Wiltshire is famous for these chalk carvings in the hillside.

Wuthering Heights [VHS] $4.88 One of the most compelling tragic romances ever captured on film, Wuthering Heights is an exquisite tale of doomed love and miscalculated intentions. Though only half of Emily Bronte’s classic tale of Heathcliff and Catherine was filmed by director William Wyler, it lacks for nothing. The story begins when a Yorkshire gentleman farmer brings home a raggedy gypsy boy, Heathcliff, and raises him a… |

Wuthering Heights [VHS] $9.95 Peter Kosminsky’s 1992 adaptation of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights goes to the extreme of casting Sinéad O’Connor in a brief bit as Brontë herself, but the film still doesn’t approach the accomplishment of William Wyler’s classic 1939 production (with Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon) or subsequent versions by Luis Buñuel and Robert Fuest. That doesn’t make it unwatchable, however: it stil… |

Jane Eyre $5.48 Charlotte Brontë’s Victorian romance is no stranger to the silver screen, but Sin Nombre director Cary Fukunaga’s affecting and beautifully mounted adaptation is among the best. Sometimes, casting can make all the difference.
