World Book Day Costume Ideas

So the UK’s World Book Day is fast approaching on Thursday 3rd March.  It has become a huge event for schools across the great nation of Britain and children really look forward to the opportunity to select their favourite book character, while parents then have to spend a frantic few days searching down the fancy dress costume to match… it’s usually last minute panic stations and the schools often don’t help the situation, usually only issuing the decree a week or so before World Book Day, much to parent’s annoyance.

Hopefully this year many schools will act upon parent’s feedback and provide more time for preparation. Great for children’s anticipation levels, they can also assist mums and dads in assembling or even making items for their costume.

Fancy Dress Shack has compiled a list of top ideas to help children, teachers and parents with some unique and novel ideas for world book day. Usually world book day events encourage children to come dressed as their favourite character of their favourite book and perennial favourite books nationwide including the following:

Thomas the tank engine characters – making the engine out of cardboard is your best bet or cobbling together a costume for your little fat controller – the zoot suit is a good start for the base of the costume, just add bow tie and top hat.

Alice in Wonderland characters like; Queen of Hearts, the mad hatter and the rabbit are great choices.

Enid Blyton characters, like the famous five, don’t forget a picnic basket and bottle of ginger beer! Malory Towers for old fashioned school uniforms for kids

Roald Dahl Characters, like Matilda, the Witches, the Twits, Fantastic Mr Fox

Nancy Drew – create a mini detective with magnifying glass and notebook.

Narnia Characters, like Prince Caspian in a knights outfit and the white witch.

The Wizard of Oz – Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tinman and cowardly lion.

The Peter Pan characters – Tinkerbell, Captain Hook and Smee the pirate.

Little Princess – everyone’s favourite little spoiled brat! Or a princess from any favourite fairytale like sleeping beauty or the princess and the pea.

However, schools can often throw a last-minute curve ball and choose a theme within a theme, like historical books and if that happens parent’s have to dig a bit deeper.

Historial Book Themes; Oliver Twist and the cast of little Victorian pauper boys is always a good one.

Books made into movies, this is an easier one and gives children plenty of scope for imagination. Lord of the Rings with characters like Legolas or the The Hobbit with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf and of course, the huge Harry Potter francise; with Harry Potter costumes, Hermione, Ron, scary demontors and Voldemort to choose from.

The great thing about World Book Day is that it has multiple benefits. Children are encouraged to read for a charitable cause and school gets disrupted for a day on the 3rd March with both teachers and children totally getting into the spirit and dressing up in some amazing and imaginative world book day costumes.  Fun to be had all round!
