The Name Stig – Its Meaning and Use Around the World

Stig, a boy’s name originally comes from the norse times, from the name Stigr.This is a short for the name Stígandr which means the wanderer. Names day is September 13th. Stian has the same origin and meaning as Stig.

Its use in Scandinavia really became popular after WW2 and in the 60s and 70s its peak popularity became apparent. In this period as much as up to 1 % of the male babies were called Stig, either alone or with a middle name affixed to it.
