Vacations In Canterbury, Kent

The British Isles are one of the most well-liked trip locations in Europe. One of the major reasons for this amazing recognition is the superb listing containingĀ  an enormous amount of first class points of interest and fascinating cities often with long histories. The history of England is highly eventful which have had an effect on virtually everybody because only a generation or two ago many parts of the world where under the rule of the British. With the expansion of the British Empire increasing numbers of missionaries spread the Christian faith. The Christian faith has helped shape the United Kingdom and one location which has played a role in this is the city of Canterbury.

Canterbury Visitor Attractions

The city of Canterbury is an ancient settlement in Kent situated on the River Stour’s banks. This intensely picturesque city is England’s ecclesiastical capital and this has been the case for many centuries. As a result the city features a multitude of incredibly important religious structures, the best being Canterbury Cathedral.

Canterbury Cathedral is most well-known for being the place where Thomas a Becket was murdered but the cathedral was founded in the latter years of the sixth century and has an eventful and long history. Shortly after Becket’s death many miracles occurred and a shrine was constructed which soon became a place of pilgrimage. Sadly you cannot visit the shrine because it was destroyed by Henry VIII however Canterbury Cathedral remains a place of pilgrimage for some.

The Canterbury Tales is the most visited museum in the town. It shows, through the use of medieval tableaux, the pilgrimages made during the times of Chaucer. Chaucer wrote the immensely popular Canterbury Tales which describes the pilgrimages of five individuals. Audiovisual aids are used to bring the characters to life over 45 minutes.

TheĀ  Museum of Canterbury (formerly The Canterbury Heritage Museum of the City) is another well attended museum. Located within the Poor Priest’s Hospital this superb museum displays the town’s history. Using state-of-the-art computers and other technology, as well as holographic images, this museum depicts eras ranging from the Vikings to the Blitz.

The Roman Museum is a strange museum in that it is under the streets of the town. Utilising actual archaeological sites the museum brings to life the Roman era through interactive computers. This is a chance to view mosaics in a Roman house.

Of course the town has many other tourist attractions, simply too many to describe here. The town’s nightlife alone would take another article. In the above article I only discuss a handful but I hope that this has generated an interest with the town and maybe you would think about taking a vacation there soon.

If you are planning a vacation in England and are in need of cheap bed and breakfast in Canterbury please take a look at our extensive listings of Canterbury hotels.
