Guide Book
Best Guide Book for International Travel?
I am a young college student and would like to do some international travel. I am in the early planning stages and need a good guide book to get me started.
I know there are a bunch of books available, but I want to know which ones you reccomend and which you suggest I stay away from.
I have heard that the Lonely Planet Guides are good, but so mainstream, I am hoping for something a little less “commercial” and something more personal and a little less touristy.

When you say “international travel,” that leaves a lot of questions, such as if you are looking for a part of the world in general. I’ve never really liked Lonely Planet because I find them to be very “texty.” I have two series that I would recommend. Even though they are easily found online, in bookstores, and usually in libraries, I still consider them to be not-quite mainstream:
The “Eyewitness Travel” series is one of my favorites. The books have full-color, glossy pages and give just enough information on every subject to be informative but not boring. They will try to provide as much information as possible, even phone numbers, web addresses, and pricing. They are very easy to understand and the photo-rich pages make it a breeze to find what you want. There a lot of books in this series and cover many parts of the world.

The second one pertains only to Europe; it is a series by Rick Steves, a man who went to Europe on business so often that he wrote books about travelling there. The books tell you everything you would want to know–not just the sites to see but the best ways to get to different places and how much the routes cost, and even sample itineraries for you to follow. He also has a website and a free podcast on iTunes where you can find even more helpful hints. Again, the books are easy-to-understand and have lots of photos.
