If you have a hardcover book you should try to keep it in as pristine condition as possible. Especially if it is a first edition. First editions can go up in value. In fact, the value of collectible books is going up at a rate of about 10% a year. The less hardcover books are handled, the more value they retain.
Most collectors want the condition of the book to be just as it came from the publisher.
It is best to buy a paperback for a reading copy and keep your hardcovers as an investment.
