Howard Pyle

Howard Pyle
How good are Howard Pyle’s retelling of King Arthur and Robin Hood?

Have them at my house. For my book report I have to choose between them, Journey to the Center of the Earth, or Oliver Twist. Note this is 10th grade english.
My strict teacher restricts all other books for this special report. Note she’s not mean or anything.

Howard Pyle’s retellings of the medieval Arthurian tales, considered as retellings, are bowdlerized and much changed from his originals. In some cases (the story of how Arthur married Guenevere is the most extreme example) they contain much invention found in no medieval texts. His individual story of Perceval is almost equally inventive. But in some stories he changes almost nothing. In his retelling of the story of Pellias, he adds a gem which makes everyone fall in love with its wearer to explain the shifts in affection in this tales. It works very well.

This could be a plus in a report, if you are willing to compare other works in your report.

That said, considered purely as tellings, and igoring any relations to the originals, just considred as stories, they are generally thought to be good.

Note that Pyle wrote four books which together more-or-less over the reign of Arthur. The adventures are supposedly more-or-less in chronological order in the books.

Pyle’s Robin Hood stories are generally closer to their sources. The sources are mainly ballads, and so Pyle is able to add material of his own invention to fill them out without varying from his source material though he does tend to soften it (like most retellers). His account may seem a little twee compared to some other retellings.

The original ballads are on the web at http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/eng/child/, ballad 117 to 154.

And do not forget Pyle’s illustrations. They are magnificent in both works, but more so in the Arthurian works.
