Italian Renaissance
What made architecture in Italy so important? Was it the Italian Renaissance?

Okay so I feel kind of stupid. I am doing a paper on the architectural wonders of Italy. Buildings like the Colosseum, Pantheon, Castel Sant’Angelo, etc, Were these all architectural remains from the Italian Renaissance? I am trying to tie them together. What other structures should I research? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :)

This is a cut & paste of a question I answered on renaissance “traditions”, which relate completely to each other by way of “architecture”. My response to your question is below:

~~~~~~~~
BYZANTINE TRADITION
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byzantine_art
“Certain artistic TRADITIONS that originated in the Byzantine Empire, particularly in regard to icon painting and CHURCH architecture, are maintained in Greece, Bulgaria, Russia and other Eastern Orthodox countries to the present day.”
Section titled “Introduction”
“Just as the Byzantine empire represented the political continuation of the Roman Empire, BYZANTINE ART DEVELOPED OUT OF THE ART OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE, which was itself profoundly influenced by ANCIENT GREEK art. Byzantine art NEVER LOST SIGHT of this classical heritage.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byzantine_art
“Byzantine architecture is the architecture of the Byzantine Empire. The empire gradually emerged as a DISTINCT ARTISTIC AND CULTURAL ENTITY from what is today referred to as the Roman Empire after AD 330…The empire endured for more than a millennium, dramatically INFLUENCING Medieval and RENAISSANCE ERA architecture in Europe…”
VENETIAN TRADITION
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venetian_Gothic_architecture
Section titled “Other Gothic Buildings”
“In addition to monumental secular architecture, examples of the GOTHIC STYLE, can be seen in surviving medieval portions of cities across Europe, ABOVE ALL the distinctive VENETIAN GOTHIC.”
FLORENTINE TRADITION
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renaissance_architecture
Section titled “Characeristics of Renaissance Architecture”
“One of the first true Renaissance FACADES was the Cathedral of Pienza (1459–62), which has been attributed to the FLORENTINE ARCHITECT Bernardo Gambarelli (known as Rossellino) with Alberti perhaps having some responsibility in its design as well.”
Sections “Development of Renaissance architecture…”; “Alberti”
“…and the FLORENTINE TRADITION for polychrome…”
~~~~~~~~

The architectural giants that you mentioned were built long before the Renaissance, but could have affected architectural styles during that time.

HADRIAN, THE PANTHEON & THE RENAISSANCE

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hadrian

Section titled “Cultural pursuits and patronage”
“In Rome, the PANTHEON, originally built by Agrippa but destroyed by fire in 80, was REBUILT UNDER HADRIAN in the domed form it retains to this day. It is among the best preserved of Rome’s ancient buildings and was HIGHLY INFLUENTIAL to many of the GREAT ARCHITECTS OF THE ITALIAN RENAISSANCE…”

~~~~~~~~
THE CATHEDRAL OF MILAN, SLOW MASTERWORK
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathedral_of_Milan
Section titled “The Beginning”
“In 1386 archbishop Antonio da Saluzzo began construction in a rayonnant LATE GOTHIC style more typically French than Italian.”
“In 1500-1510, under Ludovico Sforza, the octagonal cupola was completed, and decorated in the interior with four series of fifteen statues each, portraying saints, prophets, sibyls and other characters of the Bible. The exterior long remained without any decoration, except for the Guglietto dell’Amadeo (“Amadeo’s Little Spire”), constructed 1507-1510. This is a RENAISSANCE MASTERWORK which nevertheless harmonized well with the general GOTHIC APPEARANCE of the church.”
~~~~~~~~

ROMANESQUE & THE RENAISSANCE OF THE 12TH CENTURY

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanesque_architecture

“Romanesque architecture is the term that is used to describe the architecture of Middle Ages Europe which evolved into the GOTHIC style beginning in the 12th century.”
