Mercruiser 454 Mag starting ?
After reaching operating temperature and operating for 1/2 hour, when I go to re-start it, it starts for a split second then dies & have to turn it over again. It has never left me stranded, it always does start after that initial problem. Would the needles for the idle jets sticking be a cause of this problem? Thanks
If it runs smoooth on idle throttle with load after warmup on a cold start and idles properly with load after reaching operating temp, then its your starting technique that needs some work.
If you have the engine off longer than 15 minutes, they can cool off quickly and require a “cold start” approach. My Mercrusier 140 does that every time it sits off for longer than 15 minutes.
As long as you can get it running smooth after a cold start procedure, and no significant problems occur afterwords with performance, don’t worry about it.
Always make sure you have fuel that is used within 2 months from last use if it does NOT have the proper amount of fuel stabilizer in it. Gas with significant Ethanol in it is notoriously known to cause fuel system problems. Besides owner/operator neglect of boat maintaince/operation, fuel deposit issues is one of the leading causes of requiring service repairs.
If it will likely sit longer without being consumed, buy a bottle of fuel stabilizer and mix the correct amount for the amount of gallons pumped in. Make sure you get a big enough bottle of stabilizer for that 454′s gas guzzling big fuel tank.
Don’t forget to be eyeballing the engine temp and oil pressure every 30 to 45 seconds while the engine is running. Fuel gauge should be glanced at every 2 to 5 minutes. A critical habit to reinforce in your routine if you do not already.
