What book are Jewish Congresspeople and Senators sworn in on?
The controversy over Keith Ellison being sworn in on a Koran makes me wonder what book is used to swear in Jewish members of Congress or other high office holders…a Torah? A Tanakh?
I know that the mass swearing in is the real ceremony–I was just wondering if anyone knew specifically of whether Sen. Lieberman or other Jewish congress member had had a photo op swearing in and if so, what book they used.
Jews aren’t allowed to swear to anything, no matter what book is present. They may affirm that they will commit to something, like telling the truth or executing the duties of an office, but not swear.
