Jewish Hebrew

Learn Hebrew Online Free – Learn Hebrew through conversation and not through prayer
Should we learn Hebrew online? Should it be Hebrew through prayer or conversational Hebrew?
If we are going to use the so-called average student and a common denominator of the celebration party as the motivation for learning Hebrew, the traditional instruction method works, but the question that has to be discussed is the definition of the word “works”. What works? What are the expectations? What is the expected end product?
If the expectation is for the child to go through the process of having a bar mitzvah, then I believe the traditional way which is learning Hebrew through prayer may work. However, statistically, most children who go through this process see the bar mitzvah as the end product. They lack an in-depth understanding of Judaism, they see no relevance to their lives, and they do not live a Jewish life.
My bar mitzvah is a good example to define what you labeled as “motivation”. I had also seen this “motivation” as a Jewish teacher, Jewish principal, and a member among other Jewish educators in the US. I learned to chant my portion (I did know Hebrew), and gave a speech. My mother went out of her way to cook the best food. The party was great the food was great, the gifts were great… but at the end the feeling was – so what? It was all about food, party, cloth, social event. It was external beauty. It was not about Jewish inner spiritual growth.
My suggestion is to get away from the “bar mitzvah factory” and to teach that it is not the end product. Instead we should teach that Judaism is much more than an external and irrelevant experience. Children should begin learning and experiencing living a Jewish life at a young age. The conversational Hebrew is only one method that can be used. It makes it easier for the child to understand it because it has relevance to his life (unlike a prayer word that the teacher may not fully understand). By understanding the language in a way that it can also be used by the student, the student takes ownership of it, and from here the learning of the prayer can have much more meaning.
Another question is, where does the parent fit into the mix? Living a Jewish life is not limited to Hebrew school. The parent should be living a Jewish life, and should be doing everything that is expected of the child to do. One example is the learning of Hebrew. I had parents who learned with their children conversational Hebrew. I was told that it was a lot of fun and a great quality time with the children.
Today it is possible to learn Hebrew online free. This gives both, parents and children the opportunity to learn Hebrew online together, and to make it into a family learning experience.
