American literature is the study of the written word as it pertains to the country of the United States of America. American literature can even go back farther than 1776 and in many cases the social changes and constructs that exist within American history also exist within the pages of American literature. William Shakespeare is responsible for more contributions to the canon of English literature than probably any author and playwright in the history of the written word in the English language. Shakespeare was an accomplished poet and for most people, that would be enough. His enduring legacy is in his works of drama, comedy and tragedy. Shakespeare’s most famous plays include “The Taming of the Shrew”, “Hamlet”, “Othello”, “The Merchant of Venice” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.
Poetry is considered to be the oldest form of writing in the literary world. Some can trace the roots of poetry all the way back to ancient Mesopotamia, but the point which all can agree on are the Trojan War epics of Homer. Poetry has evolved since then and there have been many different poetic movements, but what remains the same about poetry thousands of years later is that it must contain figurative language and it must be written in verse form. British literature is writing that has its origins in the islands of Great Britain and Ireland. With a far longer history than that of its American cousin, British literature has been shaped over roughly a thousand years to the complex entity it is today. Famous British authors include William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Samuel Johnson and Oscar Wilde.
