Kenneth Grahame

Hi fellow seniors, as a child were you read a story before bedtime?
I was read a few by my mother but I can only recall being read to once by my father.
The book was called ‘The Wind in The Willows’ by Kenneth Grahame.I loved it and was read a chapter every night whilst having my nighttime hot milk and biscuit.
Years later I also the read the same book to my sons whilst they also downed their milk and biscuits.
I have now started to read the same (now very dog eared) book to my grandchildren when they have their sleepovers.
It’s at times like this when you notice just how quickly the years have flown by, scary really.
So how about you, do you have any recollections of being read to?
Yes, my mother used to read Winnie the Pooh, and poems by AA Milne ‘When we were Very Young’ etc. and I’ve loved them ever since. I used to read to my children long after they could read for themselves, and my husband used to take turns too – though my father never did.
My gran used to tell me stories, without using a book – Goldilocks and the Three Bears, I remember particularly, she used to add a great deal of drama!
We had Ladybird books for our children, and they’d ask for the same one over and over until we all knew it by heart. Forty years on, we can still recite
‘Mother Cat was busy knitting
Didn’t notice soon enough
Kittens underneath the table
Saucy Smoke and frisky Fluff…’
