Mauritius Feuds With UK Over Chagos

Mauritius is an island paradise that in the later part of the twentieth Century came to rival the experience we’d long associated with Caribbean holidays. But the island nation will be meeting it’s old colonial owner in the courtroom over the establishment of a conservation park.

The controversy has its roots in the cold war, and has ironically been exposed by the leaked US cables, the most ‘cold war’ like action in international news in two decades. The Chagos islands are undoubtedly a fantastic space in which to enjoy your Mauritius holidays. The establishment of a wildlife preserve modelled on the Galapagos is a conservation goal with undeniable merit. But the communications released by wikileaks confirm that the British have an ulterior motive behind establishing the boundary. 45 years ago the British purchased the Chagos islands from Mauritius with the object of leasing the island as a strategic airbase to the US. However, Chagos had a non-native but firmly entrenched population of 1,000 islanders, working the island’s plantations. By 1972, the British closed these plantations and deported all residents back to the Seychelles and Mauritius.

Many former residents desire a return to the island and have actively campaigned to be allowed to do so. The wikileaks cable reveals that the British government are aware that ‘the former inhabitants would find it difficult, if not impossible, to pursue their claim for resettlement if the entire Chagos Archipelago were a marine reserve’. The NATO presence on the Chagos islands continues to this day, and the airbase has been an invaluable starting point for bombing runs on Iraq and Afghanistan. Mauritius is suing the British government and claims it has pursued a ‘policy of deceit’.

The re-addition of Chagos to Mauritius’ island portfolio would doubtlessly cement its name in the tropical destination premier leagues. In the meantime, divers can head on Thailand holidays for the biodiversity of the gulf of Thailand, an undersea paradise with an Asian twist.
