Rare Books- What Makes a Rare Book More Valuable?
Rare books, in essence, are books that are hard to come by. Maybe there weren’t many printed initially. Perhaps many copies were destroyed or lost, leaving only a few remaining. There are any number of circumstances that can cause a book to become rare. However, there are some key elements and characteristics that can make certain books more valuable than others. Even between two copies of the same book printed at the same time, also known as books of the same edition, there can be differences in the value based on a number of factors.
While it is true that the very fact that rare books are rare makes them valuable, this is not the only factor that determines value. The condition of the book can make a great difference. For example, a book that is rare and in fair or even poor condition may still be desirable, but the same book in good or excellent condition is going to be much more valuable. A book in excellent condition will show virtually no wear, meaning the pages will still be crisp with little or no yellowing, and the binding will be completely intact. A book in good condition may have very little sign of wear, maybe some light yellowing, but will for the most part be undamaged. Fair and poor conditions are often quite worn and will consequently be of lower value.
Another factor that can cause variances in the value of rare books is the materials that the book is composed of. Cloth, leather, and cardboard are all possibilities, with any combination of the three being possible. A full binding, which is when the spine and boards are both completely covered in leather, is typically worth more than a half or quarter binding. The reason for this is twofold. Firstly, leather is more durable than the materials that may cover the remainder of the book in less than a full binding. This means that a book with full binding is likely to be in better condition. Secondly, leather is worth more than other materials such as cloth, and can often be beautifully decorated.
When searching for rare books, it is important to keep these ideas in mind. While simply finding a copy of the book may be a great victory, there may be a greater victory to be had in locating a copy that is in better condition or constructed of better materials. The better the condition and the more of the book that is covered in leather, the more valuable the book will be.
