Star Trek Fancy Dress

What’s your favorite scifi TV program? Mine is Star Trek, particularly the original series. Did you have any special favorite characters? I loved Mr. Spock with his pointed Vulcan ears. I imagined boldly going where no man has gone before. How exciting to explore new planets and to encounter alien creatures like the Klingons! When I have a fancy dress event, my first thought is to choose a character from Star Trek to dress up as.

There have been five television series and numerous Star Trek films made since the 1960′s, including the most recent movie, Star Trek (2009), about the early years of the Star Trek crew. You can’t have failed to notice that the uniforms they wear are really important and denote their rank on the Starship USS Enterprise. The command crew can be recognized by their gold colored tunic. Captain James T. Kirk looked rather dashing in this gold shirt with the captain’s rank insignia on the front, black pants and boots don’t you think? If you’ve seen the latest movie, you may have noticed the addition of a Starfleet emblem woven into the fabric of the gold shirts.

If you’re a bit younger than me, you may prefer Star Trek: The Next Generation which had Patrick Stewart playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard. I wonder why they decided to change the colors of the tunic for the Next Generation series. The commanding officers wore red and gold was for the engineering and operations staff.

My favorite costume is that of Mr. Spock, half-vulcan in his blue tunic. I was always fascinated by his logical thought. Mr Spock was easily the most memorable looking crew member with his pointy ears, upswept eyebrows and unique hairstyle. If you wear the Spock costume, don’t forget the Vulcan “live long and prosper” salute. You do this by raising your hand, palm forward and part you fingers between the middle and ring finger with the thumb extended. Leonard Nimoy, who played Spock, said that the salute was based on the sacred hand position used by the Jewish Rabbis.

Did you know that Nichelle Nichols, who played Lieutenant Uhura in the original series, was one of the first black actors to play a major character in an American TV series? Did you know that the name Nyota Uhura comes from the Swahili language. “Nyota” means star and “Uhura” means freedom. I thought Uhura’s short red dress was very sexy. The black boots and large hoop earrings helped.

So there we have it, if you want to become a crew member of the USS Enterprise, then you have to wear a Star Trek costume. Why not visit my Star Trek costume website to see the fantastic costumes that are available?
