Little Indian
What are the little candy coated seeds at Indian Resturants?

When we go out to eat at a local Indian Restaurant they have a dish with candy coated seeds in it. You get a little spoonful, chew them up, and your breath is so fresh. What are they?
These did not taste like licorice….actually more like a spicy room freshener. Weird huh?

It is called Mukhwas, basically “mouth freshener” for an after-dinner snack or to help with digestion. They are usually made with fennel seeds, anise seeds, coconut and sesame seeds. They are usually sweet tasting and have a strong smell when sugar is added and sometimes even different types of oils. Sometimes they are also coated in sugar and brightly colored. Usually if you drink water after eating the seeds, the water will taste very sweet too.
