Local History

What are some good local topics for a History Day Project? (See description for theme)?
The theme this year is Debate and Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences. Me and my friend can’t come up with a good local idea. Any ideas?
The Lane Slavery Debates of 1834 were probably the most famous, influential and consequential debates in Cincinnati history.

Apart from the impact on the nation, note that Oberlin College’s gain was Cincinnati’s loss, as Cincinnati apparently lost the possibility of gaining one of the nation’s great liberal arts colleges. Oberlin continues to enrich Greater Cleveland, and Cincinnati remains a city renown for its relative conservatism.

One student of these debates likely was Harriet Beecher Stowe, whose father was president of Lane Theological Seminary. Within two decades of the Lane Slavery Debates, she would publish “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” which inflamed both abolitionist and pro-slavery sentiments in the United States, exacerbating the tensions that led to the Civil War. The book also ignited anti-slavery attitudes in the United Kindgdom and elsewhere in Europe, helping keep European nations neutral during the war.

Good luck with your project.

Terror in the Heart of Freedom: Citizenship, Sexual Violence, and the Meaning of Race in the Postemancipation South (Gender and American Culture) $24.95 The meaning of race in the antebellum southern United States was anchored in the racial exclusivity of slavery (coded as black) and full citizenship (coded as white as well as male). These traditional definitions of race were radically disrupted after emancipation, when citizenship was granted to all persons born in the United States and suffrage was extended to all men.
