Lock Guide

Can someone tell me the best way to install a chain lock for my door?
I see they are only about $3 or so at the hardware store and I want to install 3 of them- one for each door. However, I have no idea how to do this. Would it be worth hiring a locksmith? What would that cost? Can anyone help guide me? I live alone and there have been some neighborhood break ins so I want to do this now.
bighair has some good ideas, but if you are talking about installing the sort of chain that allows you to open the door enough to peek out at who is there, this is a simple installation. The directions are included with the chain lock. You’d need a screwdriver minimum and a nail set is handy to start the screws in their holes. You might ask the cops how the intruders are getting in and go from there. Maybe they are knocking down the whole door, maybe the doors were left unlocked. Dead bolt locks are best installed by a person who has the right tools.
