Soul Food Recipes: Top 10 Soul Food Recipes On Video For February 2010
Soul food recipes have made a strong comeback in recent months. Easier preparation and cooking techniques, a need for comfort food due to stressful times and healthier ingredients all contribute to the rising popularity. The industry has now blossomed into a $100 million dollar industry. It covers not only food manufacturing and restaurants, but book and magazine publishing as well as television and radio.
The scope and depth of this industry continues to grow. Now you can find soul food restaurants in Great Britain, Germany and even France, thanks to the many African American men and women who stay in those countries. Many came because of the military and other Government jobs and decided to stay.
February was an active month, the holidays are over now so more people have drawn back on their eating and watching their diets again. But thanks to the harsh weather , especially on the east coast, more people are staying in and eating. So, it’s balancing out.
Here’s a rundown of the top 20 soul food recipes on video for the month of February, based on visitor page views. Plus, a brief description.
1. Candied Yams – A southern side dish favorite during the holidays and still dominating after the holiday season. Perhaps because it’s such as warm and cozy food, especially on a cold winters night.
2. Fried Cabbage – A healthy and tasty alternative to steamed cabbage, especially when it’s prepared southern style, with robust seasonings. It cooks in about 5 minutes.
3. Macaroni and Cheese – One of the all time comfort foods. You can make the healthy – lighter version (made with less cheese, and lighter ingredients). Or you can get down southern style and add 4 cheeses, half and half, eggs, and butter for that special occasion..
4. Peach Cobbler – Hands down one of the favorite southern desserts of all time month after month. When you think of the perfect southern winter dessert, peach cobbler is usually on everyone’s short list.
5. Banana Pudding – Usually a summer dessert, but it made a strong showing in our polls. The west coast soul food recipe lovers helped it get on our top 10 list this month.
6. Fried Chicken – Although fried chicken is falling out of favor with many people who feel the need to cut back on fried food, it can still make it on this list. But roast, baked and grilled chicken is coming up fast.
7. Sweet Potato Pie – Another soul food desserts favorite. It dominated during the holidays, but have fallen back slightly now that the holidays are over, but it still easily makes our top 10 list.
8. Sock-It-To-Me-Cake – Another traditional soul food favorite during the holidays. It seems to have broken out of the box. Our stats show more people want to carry that holiday feeling longer. This cakes fluffy texture and its robust cinnamon and nutmeg flavors is hard to resist.
9. Southern Meatloaf – Another comfort food people flocked to this month. No doubt the hearty taste and the robust seasonings makes it the perfect dish to warm your insides up.
10. Seafood Gumbo – The perfect dish to battle the cold is a big bowl of a hearty southern style gumbo. Don’t forget the hot buttered bread.
