DOD Has Money To Lose For Operation Dark Heart
Authors hoping to write bestsellers can only hope their book gets censored. “Operation Dark Heart” is the latest title to benefit from the publicity involved. In this instance, it is the Pentagon giving the book a boost. Military intelligence officials said “Operation Dark Heart,” the memoir by a previous intelligence officer in Afghanistan, reveals classified details damaging to national security. To prevent its release, the DOD would like to dip into its bottomless well of taxpayer dollars, purchase each existing copy and subsequently burn them.
Government pulls Operation Dark Heart
“Operation Dark Heart” is by Anthony A. Shaffer, a previous Defense Intelligence Agency officer and currently a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve. The book is Shaffer’s personal account of five months he spent as a DIA officer stationed at Bagram Air Base outside of Kabul in 2003. As reported within the New York Times, “Operation Dark Heart” passed muster in January with Army censorship. As planned, publisher St. Martin’s Press proceeded with a release date of Aug. 31. But the DIA didn’t see the manuscript until July, when it determined the book contained classified info. {By then, various dozen copies of the book had already been sent out to reviewers and online booksellers}.
‘Operation Dark Heart’ content material
Material in “Operation Dark Heart” deemed classified included passages about an operation Shaffer was involved in called “Able Danger” that he claims ferreted out hijacker Mohammed Atta long before the September 11 attacks. Fox News reports that an account by Shaffer where he said he informed the 9/11 Commission that Able Danger had fingered Atta in 2000, was one of the targets for Pentagon censors. Atta was the leader of the 9/11 hijackers and piloted American Airlines Flight 11 to the World Trade Center. Shaffer’s story lacked conclusive evidence, as outlined by a Defense Department report written as the official response.
Censorship always backfires on the censors
Shaffer’s publisher is negotiating with the Pentagon, which wants to write a check for the first printing of Operation Dark Heart in its entirety. The Washington Post reports that the Pentagon’s plan is to destroy all 10,000 copies. A 2nd printing is already in progress at St. Martin’s press-sans the sensitive passages. The first printing is sitting on pallets in a Virginia warehouse. “Operation Dark Heart” is at the moment #19 on Amazon’s bestseller list however listed as “temporarily out of stock”.
