DJ Mixing, Is It Just Natural Skill?
DJ Mixing
Summary: DJ mixing comes from a lot of hard work and practice, but natural talent also plays a role.
DJ Mixing Requires Natural Talent, Acquired Skill
DJ mixing is a unique skill. The ability to find a beat, feel it and add to it isn’t something everyone can do. If mixing is your true talent, don’t be surprised when there is nothing else you want to do.
There are a couple of things that are a must for disc jockeys. You must know your music inside out, have a great stage presence and charisma, the ability to lead the crowd and a great technical understanding to smoothly flow your set from track to track.
Developing your act
When you decide to go into DJ mixing, you’ll likely have to pick one of two performance tracks: crowd pleasing or music specialist. Some DJs play tracks that are guaranteed to fire up pretty much any crowd. Music specialists play their music, whether the crowd likes it or not.
It is much easier to play hit after hit to be a crowd pleaser, however the greatest DJs have the skill and awareness to draw a crowd in with their music selection and on stage charisma.
While you may have a great memory for music, developing your knowledge of various genres of music and your technical skills are important to becoming a good DJ. You need to know more than a couple of hit tracks. It’s a must to know the big tracks from a wide variety of genres and also have an insight into some more obscure music to develop your unique sound.
Don’t just stick to trance and techno, also check out downtempo, backbeat, hardcore and other genres to broaden your horizons.
Equipment
Your equipment is a major component to your success as a DJ. You must be aware of it and where the limits are, in particular how to make the best use of what you have. When you’re getting started, you will probably need to be economical and not get the most complicated equipment available.
You should to learn to bike before you learn to drive. Purchase a basic setup. As your skills improve you will be able to move up to the next level of equipment (funding the upgrades with the cash you’ve earned from gigging.)
As you play more shows and learn more about music, you’ll steadily become a better DJ. Experience in DJ mixing can help fill some gaps where natural talent doesn’t exist, and refine natural talent to a more professional level.
