Mormon Book
Question for Mormons who might have an older edition of the Book of Mormon?
In the older Book of Mormon editions the phrasing “dark and loathsome” was used to describe the skin color of the unrighteous Lamanites. Does anyone know why those adjectives were changed in the newer editions?
Because current day interpretation of that phrase is taken out of context of the original meaning. It meant, back in the reformed Egyptian wherein it was written, to be descriptive of something undesired, not a racial reference.
But in our modern vernacular, readers tend to take it racially. So, to avoid that misinterpretation, more modern language, close to the original, is used.
