Murder Case
What is the protocol for getting outside help in solving a murder case? (I am writing a book of fiction)?
I need to know what the protocol is for getting police from other jusirsdictions, or the sheriff’s department to help in solving a murder case in a small town and provide for protection for the citizens.
It depends on relevant state law and who is doing the asking for assistance. In CA we have a very involved mutual aid system, and there are generally MOUs and protocols in place that allow for agencies to assist one another.
In the event that an agency needs assistance in solving a homicide, they would usually arrange for the state (in our case, the CA DOJ) to assist them, and also likely arrange for the assistance of a trained investigator from a local agency. In my county we have a “violent crimes task force” that gets together for serious incidents and it involves officers from several agencies.
There is no one set of protocols for asking for assistance with an investigation. It could be as simple as two chiefs calling each other and asking for aid, or, as involved as MOUs and contracts.
