Narrow Neckties Are In Style Again

What comes around goes around. A perfect example is mens skinny neckties. The style began in the first part of the 20th century and achieved its highest popularity during the 1950′s and 1960′s, then made a fashionible resurgence in the 1980′s. Today they are returning to fashion again with such luminaries as Will Smith, Jeremy Piven and other celebrities choosing skinny black ties to wear with their tuxedos at the recent Golden Globes Awards.

Narrow Ties fashionible in the 1920′s

It is regularly agreed that narrow men’s ties range in width from 1 to 3 inches across the widest section of the necktie. Both traditional ties and flat bottom narrow ties during the first ten years of the last century were slender, ranging from 2 to 2 inches wide. Some ties measuring as thin as 1 inches, were even referred to popularlly at the time as string ties. Due to shortages associated with World War I, neckties remained unchanged for the next several years. Thin neckties around 2 inches were the fashion into the late 20s, but wouldnt resurface again until the 1950s.

In the interim, according to Sarah Gibbings, in her great book “The Tie: Trends and Traditions”, the shortages of WW II left no money, no available materials or factories in Europe. The United States became an originator of change and positive postwar aspirations for war torn Europe. Ex soldiers wanted bright colors and exciting patterns, anything happy and modern. The US delivered with a movement toward the broader, flamboyant and extravagantly colored neckties which went on to set the standard for the 40′s and early 50′s. To show off these ties, the men’s jacket lapels started to become broader and suits were buttoned lower which provided more area for the tie.

50′s Thin Ties

The American attitude of the mid 1950′s was subdued by Cold War, the Korean War and a recession. The more understated attitude was reflected in mens style. Fashions became more unadventerous, with slimmer trousers, smaller lapels and slimmer ties to match. Bright and bodacious color combinations were pushed out by restrained patterns and solid colors. This brought about the certified rebirth of the quintessential skinny black necktie.

As popular celebrities such as Elvis began to wear skinny ties, the young men copied their fashion. By the mid 1960′s neckties as narrow as 1 inch were worn by conservative men and college students alike.

Thin Ties of the 1980′s

As the excessive style fashion of the 1970′s came to an end the thin necktie reapeared, generally as a repudiation of the former decade’s bad taste.

Skinny Ties Are Popular Today

Narrow neckties are popular again. Just the other day attorney Anthony Romero, executive director of the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) made an appearance on the Colbert Report sporting a dark thin necktie. During the show, Stephen Colbert challenged him to find something wrong with him. After a quick look at Colberts broad yellow foulard patterned necktie, Romero quickly pointed out, That tie is not my favorite, which predictably brought plenty of laughs at the hosts expense.

Fashion is a matter of personal taste and fashion trends but a well dressed man sporting a distinctive thin tie will always be classy. Original classic skinny ties from the 50′s, 1960′s and 1980′s are available online when searching for “vintage skinny ties”. Try one today!
