How radical were the nineteenth century alternative systems of sexuality? AND How much of a threat did they present to the dominant normative sexual system?
I’d be happy to answer IF I knew what in the name of God 19th Century Alternative Systems of Sexuality WAS.
I know that there was 3 ‘Communal Experiments” that involved Religion and Sexuality.
The Shakers, the Mormons, and the Oneida Community.
The United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing, known as the Shakers, is a Protestant religious sect, known for their sexual equality.
The Shakers never forbade marriage, but refused to recognize it as a Christian institution and considered it less perfect than the celibate state, since only celibacy could confirm sexual equality.
All dead, no sex, no children, all gone.
Polygamy was a defining characteristic of early Mormonism.
Mormon fundamentalists believe that plural marriage where a man has more than one wife is a requirement for obtaining the Celestial kingdom.
The Oneida Community was a utopian commune that practiced Communalism (in the sense of communal property and possessions), Complex Marriage, and Male Continence (moderation or self-control, especially related to sexual desire.)
Complex Marriage, a form of polyamory in which more than one man and more than one woman form a family unit, with all the members of the group marriage being considered to be married to all the other members of the group marriage, and all members of the marriage share parental responsibility for any children.
As with anything to do with what is precieved as non-traditional or radical when it comes to religion ……. the mainstream will NOT go for it.
Also in the 1800′s people barely admitted sex existed ……. let alone discuss it openly, whether medically or religously.
The only threat anyone would have seen was that all this sex stuff was Satan’s work and get rid of it or have nothing to do with it.
So, beyond radical, Satan’s work.
No threat …. just a bunch of freaks they needed to stay away from.
