Translating and actualizing an old book ?
It’s an old book more than 50 years old. The editor does’t exist anymore, the author has passed and I didn’t suceedd contacting his family. It’s a wonderful book and I would like to translate it, how can I do it ?
It’s about a legal question.
Copyright expires 50 years after the death of the author, not 50 years after the book is published, so check that first. They can also sometimes be extended past that date, so don’t assume 50 years is an automatic green light.
Then, look in the front of the book for the name of the publisher etc. If they’re still around they should know who holds the book rights.
If not, you can contact the Library of Congress (I’m assuming you’re American, if not, contact whatever branch of your government deals with intellectual property) and ask them to help you find out whose name the registered copyright of that book is currently under.
