U.S. Commemorative Coins With Popularity And Intrigue
Celebrating and honoring people throughout American history is how U.S. commemorative coins exist. These are also issues for places, events, as well as institutions.Who and what is presented depends on the magnitude of influence the person, place, or thing has built. When the coins are released there is always a limited-time offer attached to it.
Some of the coins are hard to find if they didn’t have as many minted. Those who are just getting started will find certain cards are hard to find. This would depend on the supply that was released and the type of demand by collectors. Here is a list of the most popular United States commemorative coins by year:
There was a buzz amongst collectors in 2011 when the Medal of Honor Commemorative Coin Program was released. You can choose between the gold coin or silver coin. You will notice that both coins offer a unique approach. The gold coin uses the original Medal of Honor introduced back in 1861 on the front. The silver coin provides Army, Navy, and Air Force medals of Honor on the obverse side.
It’s easy to see that the gold coin is $5 and the silver coin is $1.The reverse side of these coins present different variations as well.Minerva is present with a Union flag in one hand and a shield in the other. This is the perfect way to bring the past and present together. The silver coin presents an infantry soldier carrying a wounded soldier over his shoulders while running from enemy fire.Getting a visual effect of these is the only way to get a true feel from each coin.
The 2009 Abraham Lincoln has been popular ever since it was released. There were a total of 500,000, but 125,000 of those were uncirculated. The bust image presented on the coin resembles the photo during the Gettysburg Address. There were several other coins throughout the first decade of the 21st century, but they weren’t the only ones still popular today.
The Oregon Trail Memorial Half Dollar is a favorite that was minted in 1926.Today they can be worth a healthy amount of money, even if they are considered worn. This is if you’re considering the original investment of one dollar. The Oregon Trail was an important part of American history and will always be apart of the educational process for youngsters around the country.
The Hawaiian Sesquicentennial Half Dollar has also been a popular option.Overall there were 10,008 minted.Juliet May Fraser was the person behind the creative design of this coin. These commemorative coins were introduced in 1928.
One of the most important pieces throughout history was the 1899 Lafayette Dollar. This was the first legal tender coin to have the president on it (George Washington). The name of the coin (Lafayette Dollar) was also on the coin, which was a first as well. Then of course it had the president on both sides of the coin for the first time.
If you’re interested in more modern commemorative coins consider the America the Beautiful Quarters such as the Grand Canyon National Park quarter. You may also be interested in the US Territory Quarters such as the Guam quarter.
