HEARING LOSS IN CHILDREN
Many hearing problems go undetected in children, leaving them with developmental challenges that could have been avoided. The sooner the diagnosis is made, the sooner a child can get help, such as a hearing aid which will help with the development of their speech and language.
Recent studies show that about 12 per cent of children in developed countries experience some hearing loss. Research also shows that one in three children has hearing loss of a degree that makes learning difficult.
About half of a child’s day is spent on listening activities, so the way they learn and their academic performance can be affected by even mild hearing loss. A third of children with hearing loss will apparently fail a grade. Yet most people don’t think about a hearing test when their child shows early signs of developmental or learning challenges.
Often, children with impaired hearing are referred to by teachers as ‘disruptive’, ‘unable to sit still’, ‘distracted’ and ‘will not listen’. Research is emerging where hearing loss is a contributing factor when there are children with behavioural or academic issues. Similarly, issues of concentration, distractibility, impulsiveness and inappropriate attention levels are often associated with the most commonly diagnosed behavioural childhood disorder, namely attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
With similar symptoms, it is possible to confuse hearing loss with ADHD.
It is absolutely vital that children have their hearing tested on a regular basis. Like visits to the dentist, a visit to an audiologist is vital .
A hearing screening will test for hearing loss, even at birth. Many factors influence a newborn baby’s hearing such as birthing issues, complications during birth, infections in the mother during pregnancy (rubella) or medication and in older children, factors could include degenerative disorders, head injuries, skull fracture, ear infections, exposure to very loud sounds and holes in the ear drum. However, in about half of cases, no cause is found.
So what to do if a child has hearing loss ? The most common intervention is a hearing aid. The most common type of hearing loss involves dysfunction of the outer hair cell – and this can be overcome by hearing aids which amplify sound.
The technology in hearing aids has improved hugely in recent times and there are several types of devices available depending on individual requirements and budget. Hearing aids are basically like a miniature public address system and the easiest way to categorise them is by the place on the body where they are worn, ie :
· Behind the ear or BTE
· ITE (in the ear)
· In the canal (ITC)
· CIC or completely-in-the-canal
It’s always best to consult a Perth hearing loss specialist for clinical advice on hearing aids and hearing instruments – but the best advice that should be heeded right now is to arrange a regular hearing test for your child. If a diagnosis is made early, the better the chance of successful intervention.

El Cid (Two-Disc Deluxe Edition) $14.42 Technically ambitious but artistically underwhelming, this 1961 epic by Anthony Mann (Man of the West) stars Charlton Heston as an 11th-century hero who drives the Moors from Spain. The film has been described as “glum,” and that is indeed apt for a story that focuses so much on its central character’s losses in the face of his simultaneous, mythic approbation. Then again, Mann has always been int… |
