How does Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel ‘Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ become a story of secrets?

If memory serves, the story is all about secrets.
The narrator of the story is also a character, a friend of Jekyll’s, who is trying to uncover the secrets that Dr. Jekyll and a strange character named Mr. Hyde are keeping.
There’s the secret of what their relationship to one another is. And why Jekyll is so understanding of Hyde. The secret of what has happened to Jekyll when he disappears. Why has Jekyll made arrangements to leave his estate to Hyde?
