What is the significance of the theme of “disobedience” in robinson crusoe?
just wanted some thoughts on the significance of robinson crusoe’s disobedience to his father and whether or not it served him well later on, Whether the disobedience was essential for the greater good of himself or what not. precisely im trying to make a thesis statement / argument
My first thoughts would contrast this to his behavior on the island. One of the things that keeps him sane and alive would be his self-discipline in maintaining the semblance of civilization. His rigorous attempts to impose order, whether in counting the days or building elaborate defenses, keep him going and save his life.
Now you can take the tack, that his disobedience to his father is the same obstinate behavior which allows him to resist falling into lazy and neglectful habits, which might have cost him his life. Where once he resisted his father, he now resists chaos and sloth. Alternatively, you can portray this as the discipline ingrained by his father manifesting itself in the “need” to practice self-discipline. That lacking another to order his life, he feels the need to order it himself.
Just some thoughts.
