School Lessons
Should sex education lessons in school be compulsory if we are to reduce the number of teenage pregnancies?

Teaching unions have welcomed a government decision to make sex education mandatory for primary and secondary pupils as “long overdue.”

http://www.morningstaronline.co.uk/index.php/news/content/view/full/82889

Personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education will be mandatory in schools from September 2011, with pupils receiving lessons in sex, contraception and relationships.

This is only a personal opinion:

Children must always be guided by their parents and never be allowed to be controlled by the state but in reality the state must make sure that children are cared for and guided to be socially acceptable to the whole community. A paradox: where do you separate the pieces of string that has the parent at one end and the state at the other?

The logical answer is working together,

I’m not so sure that sex education can be totally controlled by the state
to be honest the state is beginning to take over from individual decision making. In my opinion that is wrong. Parents need to be consulted not dictated to. I know under this government lead by a dictator it is easy not to see that.

It is understandable that parents will feel more and more resentment and may rebel at being dictated to but on the other hand sex education must start somewhere. On this occasion I think the government has got it right but may be the start date should be the last year at primary school not earlier.
