Assign Some Of The Blame To Middle Age
Let’s face it. No one wants to admit that they are facing middle age. It’s like letting go of your youth and admitting that old age is right around the corner. We don’t want to admit that we need hair loss prevention remedies or that we might not have accomplished everything we wanted to yet.
As we tighten our belly belt in hopes of keeping middle age bulge far from our daily influences and we wake in the morning to stiffness and upper back pain, we are reminded that we are slowly entering the land of middle age.
All of our lives we have dreaded finding out one day that we have crossed some imaginary line that calls us middle aged. We instead try to hang onto our glory days, or even worse, we try to fit in with the teenagers of today. They are onto us. They know we’re old and that we can not be cool because of that. No matter what we say or do, they already know the truth.
We know that we have not yet accomplished everything we set out to do when we were their age, and we pretend like we still might. Somehow we’ve made it unacceptable that our life as it is can be accomplishment enough.
In the end it’s all about who we were. It wasn’t about our salary or how many hours we logged at work. It’s how many smiles we brought to the world, how many tears we offered our shoulders to. I don’t think we have to stop any of that just because someone has decided that our life is half over.
Do we throw the couch away and get a new one so that the years we waste now are not so significant or do we simply stop spending so much time curled up comfortably in front of the TV? Perhaps we should invest in TIVO, so that we can condense our hours by miles and we will still have more time to live our lives.
We do not have to prove that we belong in this world. We owe no explanation to the kids on the corner or to our bosses who wonder why we have yet to be promoted in spite of ourselves. Our goals are our own, and we have determined that we have not met them. Even if all the evidence around us says that we have, we wonder in our hearts what life would have been like if…
