Why is Ivanhoe more popular than the other Waverley novels?
Hi, as far as I’m aware, Ivanhoe is the 5th book out of the 16 in the series. Although, how come Ivanhoe appears to be the most popular out of all of them? I was thinking about reading some of Sir Walter Scott’s works, but should I start with the first book in the Waverley series or skip right to Ivanhoe?
The Waverley books are not a series in terms of a set of books about the same characters. They are a set of historical novels, many of which are based in Scotland.
For this reason, it is possible to read any of the novels independently.
They were called the “Waverley” novels because Sir Walter Scott did not acknowledge authorship and the novels were published as “by the author of Waverley” which had been the first title.
Ivanhoe is a good book with which to start.
