Life and Work of Jacob Riis

The City of New York is famous for its talents and significant people. Jacob Riis is one of them. He is famous for devotion in exercise his photographic and journalistic abilities to concentrate on the public anxiety that New York City saw. As one of the earliest photographers who used flash, he is generally observed as the initiator in the photography. He not only put down the establishment for movement to get better the living circumstances in New York City, but also created the line for skilled photographers in this sphere.

In 1877 Jacob Riis worked as a police correspondent for the New York Tribune. His occupation permitted him to visit the most impecunious slums in the city. Riis wanted to find a difference in the world for that people who was short of voice. He turned to be one of the primary photographers in the U.S. who utilized flash powder, which helped him to take photos in the night time. Purposely, Riis made photos of Mulberry Street, broadly known in the city.

Photographs from “How the Other Half Lives” were primarily distributed in Scribner’s Magazine in 1889.

Going to the next point, we should turn to the Riis works which are identified to have converted -Commissioner of Police Theodore Roosevelt. He shouted down the police – run pitiable residences. Comparing with Riis, Roosevelt invented the expression “muckraking journalism”, a kind of journalist who created the line for others to walk by own ability and devotion.

In his pieces of art, Riis disputed for better lodging, minimum of cleanliness and illumination, the good building of squares and playing fields. Riis supported others to take a dynamic role in developing and determining own environment. In order to develop, Riis’s proposal pushed Jack London to make a similar thing on London’s East End. Now we know it as People of Abyss.

Riis certainly leaves from the angle that humanity is answerable for poor public situation. If truth be told, the views apprehended by Riis, the work “How the Other Half Lives” could not be published, if the goal of that lied on the contrary of Victorian principles and outlooks: Riis wanted to promote some changes in the culture
